“The 688th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the only All Black and All female battalion that served overseas during World War II. Led by Major Charity Adams Earley, it consisted of over 855 African American women. Many of the members received medals for their exemplary service and in 2018, a monument was erected in their honor at Fort Leavenworth ".
